Dr John Sedgwick


Dr John Sedgwick is a consultant cardiologist with subspecialty expertise in non-invasive and invasive cardiac imaging (TOE). Dr Sedgwick currently holds a position as an honorary senior staff cardiologist at Prince Charles Hospital as part of his research work, where he is a co-chair (academic) and co-founder of infective endocarditis Queensland (ieQ), an initiative to establish Australia's first clinical and research collaborative supporting improved outcomes for patients with infective endocarditis.  He was co-convenor of the inaugural Infective Endocarditis Symposium recently held in Brisbane. 

Dr Sedgwick has extensive experience in intraoperative echocardiographic TOE imaging for all types of cardiac surgery including complex valvular heart disease, patients requiring ECMO support as a bridge for cardiac transplantation and post cardiac surgical assessment in the critical care setting.

Dr Sedgwick is a Senior Lecturer with the University of Queensland Medical School and a PhD candidate.  He has co-authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed national and international journals, including two book chapters and has previously been a local examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians clinical exam.  He is also an advanced life support (ALS 2) instructor with the Australian Resuscitation Council.

He has been certified by the National Board of Echocardiography (USA) receiving "Diplomate - Adult Comprehensive Echocardiography" status as well as being granted a Fellowship of the American Society of Echocardiography.

He has previously participated in Indigenous cardiac outreach services across outback and remote Queensland communities.  Dr Sedgwick practices in all aspects of adult cardiology with special interests in cardiovascular risk management, valvular heart disease, infective endocarditis, peroperative cardiac imaging (TOE) and stress echocardiography.
