Dr Baxter is an Australian-trained Specialist General Surgeon with extensive expertise in bariatric (weight loss), upper gastrointestinal and laparoscopic hernia surgery. He has a particular interest in the upper gastrointestinal system and this led to an interest in bariatrics (weight loss surgery) and the formation of the Sunshine Coast Medical Weight Loss Centre.
After Dr Baxter graduated from UQ in 1986, he undertook advanced surgical training in general surgery, based at the Royal Brisbane Hospital for nine years before moving to the UK and becoming a fellow in upper gastro-intestinal surgery, endocrine surgery, hepatic and pancreatic surgery. He returned to Queensland in 1997 as Director of Surgery at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Brisbane.
Dr Baxter established his private practice on the Sunshine Coast in 1999, where he remains a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He pioneered bariatric surgery on the Sunshine Coast and has performed more 4,000 procedures locally since 1998.
Relocating to the Sunshine Coast was a dream come true for Dr Baxter, his wife and four daughters. When not working, he enjoys caring for his horses, gardening, going to the beach, surfing, playing music and spending time with family.
